A Eucapnic Breathing Exercise

Writer: Dorisse AhaDorisse Aha

Go for a walk and breathe only through your nose, in and out.

  • Using the comfortable rhythm of breath to regulate your pace, count how many steps you take during inhale and during exhale.

  • Equalize the two (ie: 2 steps while you breath in, 2 steps while you breath out, or 3 steps in, 3 steps out).

  • Begin holding your breath at the end of your exhale for a count equal to your in/out breaths combined. (2 in/2 out/4 hold; or 3in/3out/6 hold).

  • Do this for as long as you can tolerate it, then go back to your previous count  (2/2/4 or 3/3/6) and continue your walking rhythm until you feel comfortable again.

Keep your mouth shut! Resist the urge to open your mouth and take a deep breath! Keeping your mouth shut will enable you to retain enough CO2 to maintain optimal oxygen delivery to your body. Then begin again.
